Creative Process and Blog
My friend, Pete, has just retired from teaching after 37 years(!). To celebrate, he threw a big party to celebrate those that have been on the journey with him and for others to celebrate his retirement. At the same time, he wanted a poster to that announced what he would be doing when he retired.
Pete has started a npon-profit called Adapted Play Collective. The poster highlights the basic information of the non-profit, as well as the PlayAbility Camps that are a major part of the ministry and service to underserved parts of the world for disabled children.
This poster brings both to life and allows for for bit more information by providing QR codes to the websites for more information
One of my good friends is a part of the Teaching Staff at Sonoma Elementary School in Modesto, CA. This school achieved Distinguished School status in the 2024-2025 school year! An AMAZING achievement!
To celebrate, the Staff thought to have T-shirts to commemorate and celebrate the occasion. They wanted a white t-shirt that incorporated the Distinguished School logo and their school name. The school mascot is a dolphin, so I thought adding this would give it more action and a personalized touch.
Two times a year, I create the show posters for Center Stage Kids. Unwittingly, when I started doing these, I had NO IDEA: 1) how much I would enjoy creating them and 2) that they would be received so well. It does help that, well, I am part owner with my wife. I would not have been upset if they just didn't like them, but they allowed me to pursue my creativity and create value for our musical theater school.
This poster is for our Spring 2025 show - Ripples. I actually startd with the idea of a hadn dropping something into water and the ripple being creating from that. Although my youngest daughter liked, she is my creating, co-partner, my wife...did not. So, we nixed the hand, and just went with the ripple.
I liked the photo, but it was squared off to begin with, and it felt awkward. So, I found a way to "curve" it and it made it more welcoming. I went through a couple of fonts and landed on "Lucky Bones." Using the colors from the photo, the colors from the rest of the poster fell into place.

I was scrolling through YouTube, and a video came across my feed
In the video, Josh (I believe that is his name), talks about how much we consume, and how, as Christians, that the Word calls us to create, or be creators...I found it quite compelling. Well, he mentions that sometimes we can get caught up in creating because we want to chase whatever we think is waiting for us...gain. He then said, "It should always be God over gain." Well, it stuck.
